Support to families of Sherpas who perished on the mountains.

In 2019 the Tenzing Norgay Sherpa Foundation supported the Juniper Fund whose mission is to support and empower families and communities impacted by the loss of Himalayan high-altitude workers. Our family has always advocated for supporting families of those who lost loved ones in mountaineering accidents. It was something our father Tenzing Norgay strongly believed in and we are very pleased with our partnership with the Juniper Fund to support Himalayan families and communities find stability, become self-sufficient, and thrive.

The Juniper Fund: “…Mountaineering workers do not have the financial protection they deserve, especially if they are injured or die in the mountains. The Government Nepal, the mountaineering associations of the tour operators have done very little to protect these workers who risk the most. And many of the climbers make promises they seldom keep. These workers are also limited in speaking out about the risks and inequities they face as they might not get hired again. To ensure that the families get back on their feet and have some support, the Juniper Fund was created to fill this important void…”

Mountaineering Training: Sherpa Students received full scholarship to attend the one month Adventure/Basic/Advance Mountaineering courses offered at the prestigious “Himalayan Mountaineering Institute” in Darjeeling (founded by Tenzing Norgay Sherpa). This is done in collaboration with the United Sherpa Association, Darjeeling. This scholarship will teach mountain safety and train young Sherpas interested in the field of mountaineering.
